Our story Franklin Square’s co-founders, led by Chairman and CEO Michael Forman, started the firm in 2007 with a simple mission: investors should have the same access to alternative investments as large institutional investors. Dissatisfied with the limited alternative investment options available to the investing public, the team spent two years analyzing various ways to deliver on their mission. This led to a significant breakthrough. Franklin Square took an underutilized investment vehicle called a business development company (BDC) and created the first non-traded BDC. The model provides investors with many investor protections required under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Franklin Square also selected GSO / Blackstone, one of the largest alternative asset managers in the world, to sub-advise its funds, putting a world-class institutional asset manager within reach of investors. The result was a new model for income-based investments that has transformed the alternatives landscape.
